She was living with her mother, her step-father, step-sister (otherwise known as her best friend since they were in the 8th grade) & her son, and step-brother. Her step-father was actually her sister and brother's grandfather but he had adopted them when they were very young due to a horrible accident many years ago. She had a small income coming in but not enough to really live on her own. Her step-father bought her a travel trailer and set in on their property for her to live in.
The last relationship she was in ended almost 2 years prior and, although they remained friends, she never thought she'd love again. One day she was informed that her step-brother, her new step-father's biological youngest son, was getting out of prison and would be staying with them. She had seen him once before, 11 years ago to be precise, but didn't know him all that well. She didn't know what to think about the new man coming to live with them.
Her step-father asked her and her sister if they wanted to go with him to pick up his son at the bus station. Having nothing better to do, she agreed. Her mind raced the whole way there about the man they were picking up. No one had told her why he was in prison, only that this was his sixth stint in "the big house". It made her a little uneasy about having this ex-convict living so close to her!
She'd only ever heard negative things about ex-cons. They were dirty, mean, untrustworthy, dispicable creatures who preyed on other's. And now one of them had come to live with her! She started thinking of ways she could keep her little travel trailer safe and secure with him around.
"There's the bus!" Jean, her step-sister and best friend suddenly exclaimed pulling her out of her thoughts
"Remember, he has to be in the house before 9:30 or else the monitor on his ankle will go off and he'll be taken back to prison." Her step-father informed the pair
"That's ok, we can catch up on the way home." Jean happily replied, getting out of the duel-cab truck to await her uncle
She, however, sat in the truck and simply observed. People got off the bus and stood around waiting their bags to be unloaded. The ride home was spent in catching up and talking about his trip back home. In the spirit of politeness, she stayed quiet since she didn't know him all that well. "Besides," she figured, "he'd probably feel more at ease talking to his real family than someone he doesn't know from Joe-Blow down the street."
When they returned home she went to the back room to get on her mother's computer for a while. Once she was done she started to head to her trailer. As she was walking through the house, she noticed some of his real family had come over to visit him. It was a nice thought but she was still feeling uneasy about him living here. On top of that, their house was full as it is, where the hell is he gonna sleep?! Sighing heavily, she closed the door to her trailer and opted to watch 'The Last Samurai' before heading off to bed. Tomorrow was going to be a busy day, from what she was told and the poor man wasn't allowed to leave the house at all until Monday when he had to be at his first meeting with his parole officer!
