Hi all I'm enchantedsleeper and I'm from England. (Feels kind of like I'm at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting )
About a year and a half ago I was invited to this bulletin board called FanBBS where fanficcers and fanartists from various places around the world were setting up 'offline' meetings, where they could meet up IRL and discuss all things fan-related with fellow fans. ;D A group of us who live around the London area set up a group called The Neo Writers and we've been meeting up every couple of weeks in a café ever since. It's tons of fun and I've made some great friends from it, but there aren't many of us (between 2 and 6 depending on how busy people are) and so I've started looking all around the internet to see if anyone else is interested in joining. X3
I'm not just making a thread to try and advertise the Neo Writers, though, because I think the idea of offline fanfic meetings is a great one in itself. As it stands, there are really no events (like conventions and so on) out there dedicated to fanworks, even though there are events and meet-ups and goodness knows what for every other kind of hobby. I think it's because fanfic and fanart don't have that great a reputation and aren't considered a genuine hobby, more like a very guilty secret, but I see no reason why they shouldn't be recognised as an art form equal to any other.
Anyway *gets down off hobby horse* please reply if you're interested in the idea of IRL fanworks meetings or just have something to say on the topic. :3 The Neo Writers have a Facebook group over at www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_128467220571747&ap=1 It's very new, but we'd love to have some people join and discuss meeting up, especially if you think you might be able to make it to London to say hi - even as a once-off You can also contact us at theneowriters@gmail.com. Or if you're elsewhere in the world, check out www.fanbbs.net/off/ to see if there's a group near you (and if not, start one up!)
Okay, that's enough out of me. End plug :3[/color]
