except without the spaces in the tags.

You need to use a direct link to the avatar you want to use. No ![]() tags.

The link above is a good example because I just used it to change my avatar. When you're placing a link for your avatar there is a button called "checked url" that you can hit and if the direct link will work then the avatar (or new avatar in some cases) will immediately show up.
I hope this helps ladies and you are able to have your wonderful avatars working properly
